A number of schools in the Central Valley have surveillance cameras so administrators can keep track of what's happening on
campus. But one school in Turlock is taking the idea a step further and is letting parents watch students.
Turlock Learning Center Education Academy, a private school in Turlock, has 16 cameras watching common areas and classrooms. Parents can log on with a password and watch up to 60 minutes a day through the Internet.
Students don't necessarily think of the surveillance as a bad thing. "I think it's real fun because my Mom and Dad can watch me," said fourth-grader Jeffery Jants.
The system allows Jeffery's mother, Kim, to keep an eye on her son while she works out of their home. "I feel more in control as a parent as far as what he's being exposed to, what his day's like," said Kim Jants.
The school installed the cameras for security reasons, but Jants says there other benefits as well. "Say it's an area I know he's not particularly interested in or what have you. I can actually see is he paying attention or isn't he," said Jants.
The video from the cameras is also archived in case there is a need to look at it later.
